A mixture of talks and screenings looked at different definitions of the British fashion film.<\/p>\n<p><strong>British Musical \u2013\u00a0Wed 26 March 2014<\/strong><br \/>\nIn its 80 year history, from <em>Elstree Calling<\/em> (1930) to <em>Streetdance 3D<\/em> (2010), the British Musical spans many forms and styles. This session considered some of the achievements of the genre, looking at both the films of the 1930s and pop music in British cinema. Actor Murray Melvin discussed his experience of working on the <em>The Boyfriend<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Boy Friend Screening \u2013\u00a0Wed 26 March 2014<\/strong><br \/>\nThe perfect fusion between fashion and musical in <em>The Boy Friend<\/em>, a film that exemplifies Ken Russell\u2019s audacious approach, rounds off the day. Advertised as \u2018a glittering, continuously delightful musical extravaganza\u2019, this witty and cynical film showcases some dynamic performers, extraordinary choreography and glorious costumes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Student Short Film Competition \u2013\u00a0Thurs 27 March 2014<\/strong><br \/>\nThe shortlist of the best five student short submissions. The winner and runner-up were announced by a panel. Joining the panel were Mark Reid (BFI), Eliot Grove (Raindance), Jared Fryer (Cinema Jam) and John Kearney<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bhaji on the Beach \u2013 Thurs 27 March 2014, \u00a0at Genesis Cinema<\/strong><br \/>\nLBC presented a screening of <em>Bhaji on the Beach<\/em> at Genesis Cinema with a pre-screening appearance from Gurinder Chadha. The film follows the journey of a group of women of Indian descent to the beach resort of Blackpool and marks Chadha\u2019s debut as one of the foremost female filmmakers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Indo British Cinema \u2013 Fri 28 March 2014<\/strong><br \/>\nSouth Asian Cinema Foundation (SACF) presented\u00a0<em>Lifting the Curtain: Indo-British Collaboration in Cinema (1908-1929)<\/em>, which unravels the cinematic contribution of film pioneer Niranjan Pal and <em>A Hidden Heritage: Indo-British Collaboration in cinema in UK (1930-1951)<\/em>, which explores the careers of international stars of Indian origin like Sabu.
