Day One – DESIGN DAY 12 JUNE 2012

11AM BRITISH GARDENS ON SCREEN

ArtsOne, Queen Mary University of London

The festival will begin with a screening of James Broughton’s The Pleasure Garden (1953), winner of the Prix de Fantasie Poetique at Cannes in 1954. This will be followed by a discussion with Elisabeth Bond (screenwriter – The Assam Garden) and Tim Anderson (Chair – Friends of Maryon Wilson Park).

2PM CELEBRATING POST-WAR DESIGN AND FILM ArtsOne, Queen Mary University of London

Join us in celebrating post-war Britain as seen through the lens of British film. There will be talks from Professor Sarah Street (University of Bristol), Claire Smith (BFI) and Alex Goddard (Geffrye Museum) as we explore design through the 1948 Olympic Games, the Festival of Britain in 1951 and the Queen’s Coronation in 1953. This will be followed by a reception of tea and cakes.

6.30PM PREVIEW SCREENING: FAST GIRLS

Genesis Cinema

Set to be the feel-good film of the summer, Fast Girls tracks the rollercoaster journey of a British female sprint relay team and stars a trio of Britain’s hottest young stars: Lenora Crichlow (Being Human), Lily James (Wrath of the Titans) and Bradley James (Merlin).

Directed by award-winning young filmmaker Regan Hall (3 Hours) and produced by Damian Jones (The Iron Lady, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll), Fast Girls is co-scripted by Noel Clarke (Adulthood, Kidulthood), Jay Basu and Roy Williams.

Join us at this special preview of this British film where we will be joined by Damian Jones. This is a free event for all students and will be followed by a drinks reception at the Genesis cinema.

Day 2 – INDUSTRY DAY WEDNESDAY JUNE 13TH

 11AM GETTING STARTED IN THE INDUSTRY ArtsTwo, Queen Mary University of London

This is an opportunity to meet industry professionals from various aspects of the film industry. The event will start with a panel discussion, followed by a speed dating session and a working lunch. Guests will include Laura Adams (BFI Event Programmer), Lucy Fawcett (TV and Film Script Agent), Jane McGee (film director) and Queen Mary University alumni Stella Corradi (Director’s Assistant – Adventure Pictures). Food will be provided to ticket holders.

2.30PM DISCOVER FRESH TALENT

ArtsTwo, Queen Mary University of London

We will be showcasing filmmaking talent at Queen Mary, including student films and the work of our in-house production unit, Mile End Films. The event will begin with a screening and discussion on the work of Jane McGee, an independent film director who will share her experiences with budding filmmakers.

6.30 PM – We have invited a very special guest for a Q&A and screening – WATCH THIS SPACE!

DAY 3 – CRAFT DAY THURSDAY JUNE 14TH

11.15AM BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT:

CHANNEL 4 SUPPORTING NEW FILM-MAKERS

Justin Smith (Channel 4 Television and British Film Culture) will discuss Channel 4’s initiatives to cultivate emerging film-making talent. This will include a discussion on the BFI Young Directors programme, shown as part of Midnight Hour in the 80s, and Channel 4’s new multi-platform initiative Film 4.0.

2PM LINDSAY ANDERSON MEMORIAL FOUNDATION

ArtsTwo, Queen Mary University of London

This is an event to celebrate Lindsay Anderson, the leading figure of the Free Cinema movement and the British New Wave. There will be a screening of Britannia Hospital (1982) and a talk by Ted Craig, artistic director of the Warehouse Theatre, Croydon , who collaborated with Lindsay Anderson on the production of the film.

4.30PM SALLY POTTER & ADVENTURE PICTURES: PREVIEW OF BOMB ArtsTwo, Queen Mary University of London

We will finish the festival with a sneak peak at Sally Potter’s upcoming film, Bomb. Introducing the preview will be Sarah Atkinson and Claire Holden from Adventure Pictures, who will discuss the work of Sally Potter and her innovative archive, SP-ARK. The festival will conclude with a drinks reception.
